Specchio, a small hamlet in the municipality of Solignano (Parma), is located at an altitude of 566 metres on Monte Spinola, the ridge that separates Val Pessola from the Marena river valley. The surrounding area is dotted with small villages, such as Filippi, Marena, Zibel and Massari, which bear witness to the ancient rural structure of the Apennine area.
Specchio has a long and complex history: since the early Middle Ages, the mountain was disputed between Parma and Piacenza, becoming a strategic border point. The castle, documented since 1132, was at the centre of centuries-old disputes between bishops, municipalities and noble families. Over the centuries, it came under the control of the Pallavicino and Visconti families and, later, the Valeri and Rugarli counts, until the abolition of feudal rights in 1805. With the Napoleonic reorganisation, Specchio became part of the new municipality of Solignano.
A small place but rich in history, nature and architectural evidence that recounts centuries of life in the Apennines.
