Its call, a loud and intense cry, often echoes through the valley... Just look up and you will see it circling high in the sky, majestic... it almost seems to float in the air with its broad wings and open tail, which it uses to catch the updrafts. The buzzard loves these hilly landscapes, rich in clearings, pastures and cultivated fields alternating with woods... an ideal environment in which to hunt and raise its chicks. You can often see it perched on a pole or an isolated tree, motionless, scanning the ground for movement. It waits for potential prey to pass by: small mammals, reptiles, birds. It is a territorial and monogamous bird of prey, faithful to its nesting sites for years. In spring, it builds a large, sturdy nest among the branches of tall trees or on rocky walls and lays 2-4 eggs. Both parents will care for the young until they are independent after about 3 months. Seeing it soar in the sky is always a sight to behold: a silent reminder of the wild nature that continues to live alongside us.
